Grand Bayou and other FPCC Tribes have served as a hosting/teaching community for several years. We recognized the need to provide a view of village lifeway to people from outside of the Tribe. We stress up-front, that we do not serve as a touring group, but host various groups in the pursuit of exchanges of knowledges. The sole purpose of our interactions is to offer a perspective of village life, through the experience and voice of the villagers who choose to participate in sharing their knowledge. It is through this discourse; much of which is questions and answers, that we share how village-life unfolds on a daily basis. The opportunity to learn and hear from people who have been in-place for centuries has proven favorable overall. We do not entertain extractive conversations. Discourses must be two way and fully transparent.. the benefits of information shared must be shared by host and visitor. In the beginning, there were a couple of disappointing interactions which necessitated in the drafting of a “Declaration of Principles and Protocols”. Any person/persons wishing to engage the community or its members, is provided with a copy of the Principles, and must agree to adhere to said Principles before the meeting takes place. Building rapport takes time as TRUST is established, but the relationship can prove to be lasting, and rewarding, even to future works.
